By far the most expensive and technically challenging costume we have ever made here at DMS is the loveable robot character "TEX", the mascot for THX, Ltd., which was founded by George Lucas and began it's life as a division of Lucasfilm, Ltd. TEX is entirely computer-generated and can be seen in THX-certified theaters across the country in their promotional trailers that run before the start of each movie. THX awarded the contract for the creation of a costume version of TEX to us, and it was used for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this past January. It took a solid month to build. His upper body, forearms and feet had to be sculpted, molded & made in fiberglass. His head is a polycarbonate globe; his upper arms are also polycarbonate. All of the plastic components were professionally painted by my brother, Chris Morton, who does custom auto body paint work. He used a metallic-flaked red paint for the fiberglass pieces and mirrored chrome paint for the silver sections. TEX's hands and belt are made of a dense, black foam. The body is in two sections, connected at the waistline by means of overlapping heavy Velcro tabs on the inside. The character stands about six and a half feet tall once it is all together. Needless to say, we're pretty proud of TEX.
